1972 Model Pattern Crown Prince Philip Silver Wedding

1972 Model Pattern Crown Prince Philip Silver Wedding Obverse

* Images are of the actual product not stock images

A silver proof pattern twentyfive pence Crown, struck for the Silver Wedding of Queen Elizabeth the Second and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. The obverse features the head of the Duke of Edinburgh, facing right with the small initials below indicating that the engraver is Humphrey Paget. The reverse bears the word ‘model’, indicating that this is a pattern piece. Indeed, this coin looks quite different to the silver pattern pieces the were eventually issued to mark the 1972 anniversary. The uneven, slightly sharp edge also indicates that this coin as a pattern. Royal Mint pattern pieces like this one are produced in very small numbers as test or design trials and are highly sought after in the world of numismatics. The last example sold fetched £340 plus commission as part of London Coins lot 1868 on 02/09/2012.
