An interesting hammered silver Halfgroat of King James the First. From the second coinage issue of his reign, struck in the period 1604 to 1619. This example has a Coronet mint mark, indicating that it was minted between the years 1607 and 1609 at the Tower mint in London. The coin features a crowned rose to the obverse. The legend should read ‘I D G ROSA SINE SPINA’ per North but this Halfgroat seems to read ‘SPINE’ instead. The reverse shows a thistle: the two national emblems speaking to the union of the crowns that occurred when James VI of Scotland became James I of England in 1603. James also issued a very similar coin with a Thistle mint marks and a value of Two Shillings in Scotland. This coin comes with an old B A Seaby ticket/envelope from Jan 1965 listing a price 27/6. Spink 2659, North 2104.
