Buy a 1603-1604 James I Shilling First Bust MM Thistle

Hammered silver Shilling from the first coinage of James I (1603-1604). The obverse shows crowned and draped first-type bust showing a distinctive square cut beard, the portrait enclosed within a beaded circle. The numerals ‘XII’ behind for denomination: a Shilling or 12 Pence. The obverse legend declares James rule of England, Scotland, France and Ireland. He had come to the Scottish throne at just 13 months old in 1567 and ascended the throne of England and Ireland when he succeeded Elizabeth I in 1603. The French title was more hopeful than accurate. The thistle mint mark on this this shilling dates this coin to the first years of James reign in England while he was busy dodging plots and conspiracies. The reverse shows a square topped shield of royal arms within a beaded circle, the legend - preceded by another thistle mint mark - reading ’EXVRGAT · DEUS · DISSIPENTUR · INIMICI’: ‘may God rise up, may enemies be scattered’ - note the ‘V’ in ‘EXVRGAT’ spelled ‘EXERGAT’ elsewhere. Weight: 5.82 grams. Diameter of 30.4 millimetres. Grade: F+ - Full flan with good bust and good legend details, some minor scuffs and scrapes characteristic of being excavated: Fine and better in places. Spink 2645, North 2072.
Grade: Grade: F+
