Legend reads: ‘ELIZABETH · D · G · ANG · FRA · ET · HIB · REGINA’. Toothed edge. Elizabeth succeeded her sister, Mary I, as queen of England in 1558. Early in her reign, as part of a recoinage effort, Elizabeth’s mint retained the services of Eloy Mestrelle, formerly an employee of the Paris mint. He was authorised to install minting machinery at the Tower Mint in 1560. A new milled coinage was authorised the following year. Mestelle’s work was interrupted by the plague and the break down of his equipment. All the while, the production of hammered coinage increased. In 1672 the effort was abandoned due to costs. It would be nearly another century before his methods were adopted wholesale. This fascinating coin weighs 2.92 grams and has a diameter of 25.8 millimetres. Grade: VF - Light, attractive tone with colour, full flan and excellent details: all round Very Fine. S 2594.
