Buy a 1483-1485 Richard III Hammered Silver Groat MM Boar’s Head

A rare hammered silver Groat of king Richard the Third, struck at the London mint between the years 1483 and 1485. The obverse features the facing crowned bust of the king within a tressure of nine arcs with the Boar’s Head type 2 mint mark above the crown. The reverse shows the standard long cross, quartering two beaded circles. Three pellets appear in each central quarter and the wording for the mint in the next. The mint mark of Sun and Rose appears before ‘POSVI’ in the outer legend. It’s rare to find silver Groat from Richard III’s short reign which ended – along with the Wars of the Roses – at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. The recent discovery of the last Plantagenet king’s resting place has generated significant historical interest in his rule and the coins he issued. Spink 2156.
Grade: Grade: GF - Medium grey tone, a little ‘grainy’ under magnification but with strong details for Fine
