A hammered silver mule Halfgroat of king Edward the Third. From the pre-treaty period (1351 to 1361) of Edward III’s fourth coinage issue (1351 to 1377). The pre-treaty coinage was minted before the Treaty of Brétigny (1360) when Edward renounced his claim to the French throne. This coin is a mule, meaning that a die of one class has been used with a die of another class. Here we have an obverse featuring a forward-facing portrait of the king with a Crown mint mark from series F. The reverse, however, shows the long cross with three pellets in each quarter and the Cross 3 type mint mark of series G. A very interesting, rare and collectible mule coin from the first period in which this denomination was struck. Spink 1577/1578.

Reverse series G. Pattee long cross with three pellets in each quarter. Within inner circle: 'CIVITAS LONDON'. Within outer circle: 'POSVI · DEV ADIVT ORE'. Mint mark: Cross 3.

Grade

F - Medium grey toned with reasonably clear legends and details with a scrape to the bust detail, otherwise no real problems for this rare coin.
