This Crown coin was issued to celebrate the 1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and features a portrait of Her Majesty on horseback, paired with four shields of royal arms and national flowers on the reverse.
As standard, the edge of these coins bears an inscription that reads '+ FAITH AND TRUTH I WILL BEAR UNTO YOU', which is a line spoken by senior royals and peers during the Coronation ceremony, in a pledge of allegiance.
On a small number of these 1953 Crowns, the edge inscription is improperly spaced, resulting in the final 'U' of the text being either double-struck or missing in this case, which has led to such coins being called 'missing U errors'.
This error is not recorded in major published guides to British currency, but has sometimes been referred to as the 'Hip-Hop' error and referenced as one of the most desirable pre-decimal Elizabeth II error coins available to collectors.
It is unknown exactly how many of these error-edge 1953 Crowns were minted, but they appear to be scarce, with only a handful of similar pieces with misstruck edges found in auction catalogues over the last few decades.
