Buy a 1948 Threepence

Iconic twelve-sided nickel-brass UK Threepence coin, minted for circulation in 1948 with a classic portrait of King George VI by Humphrey Paget.

No Threepences were issued by the Royal Mint in 1947, and 1948 saw a modest mintage of 4,230,400 coins. In 1948, Britain was still under strict rationing, but this year also saw the arrival of the Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks, marking the beginning of a modern multicultural society.

  • 1948 3d coins are the last to feature the words 'IND: IMP' (Emperor of India) on the obverse
  • The reverse shows a simple thrift plant design, created by Frances Madge Kitchener
