A collectable silver Sixpence of king Edward the Seventh, dated 1909. The obverse features the uncrowned head of the king, facing right, with the abbreviated legend reading EDWARDVS VII DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FID: DEF: IND: IMP:'. This translates as ‘Edward the Seventh by the grace of God, King of all the Britains’. The tiny ‘De S.’ below the truncation of Edward’s neck identifies the artist behind this portrait as British medallist George William de Saulles. The reverse shows the denomination - ‘SIX PENCE’ - in the centre, surmounted by a crown and surrounded by branches of laurel (left) and oak (right), tied at the base with a ribbon. The date, 1909 appears below. This design is the work of the engraver Jean Baptiste Merlen. Before his accession, Edward was the longest serving heir apparent in British history, only surpassed by his great-great-grandson Prince Charles in 2011. Edward eventually ruled from 1901 to his death in 1910. This Sixpence is composed of 2.83 grams of .925 sterling silver and has a diameter of 19.30 millimetres. Grade: MS 61 by NGC.
