Legend around reads: ‘EDWARDVS VII DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FID: DEF: IND: IMP:’. Artist's initials - ‘DES’ - appear below truncation of the portrait’s neck. Reverse: ‘SIX PENCE’ in centre with crown above, surrounded by wreath of olive and oak branches, tied below with ribbon. Date at base: 1905. Artist: Jean Baptiste Merlen. Edward VII, known as the ‘uncle of Europe’, succeeded his mother, Queen Victoria, in 1901 and ruled until his own death in 1910. Weight: 2.83 grams, diameter: 19.3 millimetres.
