A collectable silver matte proof Shilling of King Edward VII, dated 1902 and graded by NGC. The obverse features the uncrowned head of the King, facing right, with the abbreviated legend around translating as ‘Edward the Seventh by the grace of God, King of all the Britains’. The tiny ‘De S.’ below the truncation of Edward’s neck identifies the artist behind this portrait as British medallist George William de Saulles. The reverse, also by De Saulles, shows a lion, passant, atop a crown which divides the date. The legend lists the denomination - ‘ONE SHILLING’ and the phrase, abbreviated and translated: ‘Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India’. This is a high grade example that would have originated in a proof set, issued to mark Edward’s coronation and his first currency. It’s from a limited mintage of 15,123 pieces. Weight: 5.66 grams. Diameter: 23.50 millimetres. Edge: milled. References: S 3982, ESC 1411). Grade: PF 61 by NGC (cert no. 6029966-001).
