£299.00
A scarcer proof silver Shilling of Queen Victoria, dated 1893 and graded by NGC. The obverse of this coin features the ‘Old Head’ or ‘Widowed Head’ portrait by medallist and sculptor, Sir Thomas Brock. This effigy replaced the ‘Jubilee Head’ in this year and was used until the Queen’s death in 1901. It shows Victoria wearing a long veil, draped over a tiara and multiple decorations on her chest. The lettering of the legend here is comparatively large when seen next to the ‘small lettering’ variant also seen with this date. The reverse shows three crowned shields, representing England, Scotland and Ireland with national flower emblems in the spaces between. Engraver: Edward Poynter. Its worth studying the English rose carefully: it’s smaller than on other coins of this issue. These shillings are numerous in high grades making them affordable while the range of die combinations and variations makes them fascinating to study. Weight: 5.66 grams. Diameter: 23.50 millimetres. Composition: .925 sterling silver. References: S 3940. Grade: This coin has been graded PF 61 by NGC, acknowledging its proof finish and limited wear. You will receive the coin pictured, its holder displaying certificate no. 6029966-020.
