MS 64 graded silver Shilling of Queen Victoria, dated 1893 from the first year of her ‘Old Head’ coinage issue (1893-1901). The obverse shows the veiled and draped bust of the queen, facing left with the legend around in smaller sized lettering. This portrait is the work of Thomas Brock whose initials - ’T.B.’ - appear beneath the truncation of Victoria’s shoulder. The reverse shows three crowned shields, representing England, Scotland and Ireland with national flower emblems around, enclosed within a garter. The rose on this example is somewhat smaller than on others in the series. Engraver: Edward Poynter. These coins are popular in high grades with their die combinations and variations making them an interesting and fairly affordable series to collect. Weight: 5.66 grams. Diameter: 23.50 millimetres. Edge: milled. Grade: NGC MS 64 (NGC Cert # 6029966-014). References: S 3940, D 1010.
