A silver Shilling of Queen Victoria, dated 1886. The obverse features the fourth type A7 Young Head of the queen, facing left with her hair bound back with a double fillet. No initials appear below the truncation of her neck though this portrait is the work of the Royal Mint’s Chief Engraver, William Wyon. The reverse shows the value - ‘ONE SHILLING’ - at the centre of a wreath of laurels (left) and oak leaves (right), tied at the bottom with a ribbon. A crown appears above and the date - 1886 - below. No die number is apparent. This reverse design is attributed to Jean Baptiste Merlen. There’s a great deal of variety in these Young Head Shillings which have a range of types and variations, making them an engrossing series to study and collect. Spink 3907, Davies 924.
