A collectable silver Shilling of Queen Victoria, dated 1875. The obverse features the third type A6 Young Head of the queen, facing left with her hair bound with a pair of ribbons. This is the work of the engraver William Wyon though his initials do not appear below the truncation of Victoria’s neck. The reverse shows the denomination - ‘ONE SHILLING’ - in the centre of a wreath of laurels (left) and oak leaves (right). The branches are tied with a ribbon and a crown appears above. This motif was designed by Jean Baptiste Merlen. The date - 1875 - which appears at the base of the design is surmounted by the die number: 67. These Young Head shillings have many types, variations and die numbers, making them fascinating to study and collect. Weight: 5.66 grams. Diameter: 23.50 millimetres. Edge: milled.
