A silver Florin of Queen Victoria, type B3, dated 1872. This is known as the ‘Gothic’ type due to the range of gothic revival details found in the design which is the work of Royal Mint Chief engraver William Wyon. The obverse features an intricate, crowned portrait of Victoria, facing left. Under the bust is the die number - 46 - and the initials of the engraver, William Wyon. The reverse shows crowned cruciform shields of royal arms around a central floriated cross. National flower emblems appear in the angles. This was designed by William Dyce but engraved by William Wyon. The gothic florin has many types and variations making it a fascinating series to study and collect. Spink 3893.
