A collectable silver Sixpence of Queen Victoria, dated 1864 and graded MS 64 by NGC. The obverse features the second uncrowned type A2 Young Head of the Queen, facing left with the hair bound back with a double fillet, by the engraver William Wyon. The reverse shows the denomination - ‘SIX PENCE’ - at the centre, surrounded by a wreath of laurels (left) and oak leaves (right), tied together with a ribbon. A crown surmounts the design which is the work of Jean Baptiste Merlen. The date, which appears at the base of the coin shows a ‘plain’ four (as opposed to a serif four). The die number three - an early die - appears just above the date. These Young Head Sixpences have many variations, making them a fascinating series to study and collect. Weight: 2.83 grams. Diameter: 19.30 millimetres. Edge: milled. Grade: this excellent example has been graded MS 64 by NGC, the equivalent of Choice Uncirculated. References: S 3909, D 1064.
