£115.00
Hard to find in high grade, this copper Half Farthing of King George the Fourth is dated 1830 and was originally struck for use in Ceylon. The obverse features the laureate head of George IV facing left. This example shows the ‘large’ date variant below the portrait. The reverse depicts Britannia, seated facing right with her left hand resting on oval shield decorated with the Union Jack whilst her right holds a trident. There’re two types to this reverse, this one being ‘A’ where Britannia’s helmet and trident prongs break into the base of the lettering. Below the seated figure appears a small cluster of national flower emblems: a rose, thistle and clover. From 1796 Ceylon - now modern day Sri Lanka - was a British Crown colony. The island proclaimed independence in 1948, becoming a dominion then a republic in 1972. A Very Fine example. Spink 3826.
