Collectible Shilling of George III, dated 1817. Obverse: bull head laureate portrait of the king, facing right, by Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci. Legend reads: ‘GEOR: III D: G: RRITT: REX F:D:’ - ‘RRITT’ should be ‘BRITT’: known error. Date below. Reverse: shield of royal arms with arms of the House of Hanover in the centre (included after 1801). Shield crowned, within garter bearing the words ‘HONI · SOIT · Q | MAL · Y · PENSE’. Edge: milled. This coin is among the first issued after the Coinage Act of 1816 with an unpopular and unflattering new portrait that was soon replaced. It would have been produced on newly installed steam-driven machines, supplied by Matthew Boulton at the Royal Mint’s new premises on Tower Hill. This example weighs 5.56 grams and has a diameter of 23.7 millimetres. Grade: UNC - A bright tone with some lustre: choice Uncirculated. Spink 3790.
