1791 pattern royal cypher Sixpence by J-P Droz. Obverse: royal cypher - interlinked ‘G’ and ‘R’ - within wreath of laurel branches, crown above. No toothed border. Reverse: figure of Britannia, seated on globe with oval union shield at her side. Spear in one hand, other hand extended. Legend above reads ‘BRITANNIA’ with ‘1791’ below. Border also un-toothed. Edge: plain. Design attributed to Jean-Pierre Droz (1746-1823), the Swiss engraver and engineer, then employed by the Soho Mint. During his time in England Droz also produced a range of pattern Shillings and Halfpennies: the first British coins to be struck on steam presses. This pattern Sixpence has a weight of 2.72 grams and a diameter of 20.6 millimetres. Grade: UNC - Exceptional blue and red toning: most attractive example in the hand - Uncirculated, hard to find better. Bull 2222, Old ESC 1647.
