Rare Sixpence of king William III, dated 1696. Obverse: first laureate draped bust of William, facing right. Legend: ‘GVLIELMVS · III · DEI · GRA’ (no stop after ‘GRA’). Reverse: smallcrowned cruciform shields of royal arms with a lion rampant in the centre for the House of Orange-Nassau. Irish harp is later variant. Date - 1696 - divided by topmost crown. Legend reads: ‘MAG BR · FRA · D · HIB REX ·.’ Rare combination of first bust and small crowns reverse, one of many interesting variants from 1696 and 1697. Angled reeded edge. Weight: 2.96 grams, diameter: 21.2 millimetres. Grade: GF - Mid grey tone, patchy in areas and a little grainy under magnification, possible a metal detecting find - overall good fine. Spink 3531.
