Buy a 1689 Halfcrown Frosted Caul Pearls

Attractive silver Halfcrown of William and Mary, dated 1689. Obverse: first conjoined busts of William III and Mary II, both draped and facing right, the former sporting a wreath of laurels. Legend reads: GVLIELMVS · ET · MARIA · DEI · GRATIA’. Reverse: large crown over square topped shield of royal arms with the arms of the House of Orange-Nassau in the centre. The crown displays frosting (tiny dots, adding texture) to the ‘caul’ (between the arches) but not to the interior. The band displays pearls between the larger jewels. The legend around reads 'MAG · BR · FR · ET · HIB · REX · ET · REGINA · 1689', the date (1689) divided and displayed either side of the crown. There are a significant number of known variants of 1689 Halfcrowns with differences in the reverse legend and appearance of the crown. The joint portrait that appears on the obverse was only used on English coinage between 1689 when the monarchs were crowned and 1694 when Mary died. This Halfcrown weighs 15.04 grams and has a diameter of 33.4 millimetres. Grade: VF - Light attractive tone with some minor flecking: Very Fine. References: S 3434
