A silver Halfcrown of King Charles the Second, dated 1679, The obverse features the fourth draped, laureate bust of Charles II, facing right, by John Roettiers. The reverse shows a crowned cruciform shield of arms with a crown dividing the date, all around a central garter star. Interlinked ‘C’s appear in the angles of the shields with the outer legend translated as ‘King of Great Britain France and Ireland’. The edge has raised regnal year lettering of ‘TRICESIMO PRIMO’ (regnal year 31). Charles counted his years as monarch from the death of his father in 1649 though he was restored to the throne in 1660. He would rule until 1685 when he was succeeded by his brother. These early Halfcrowns are becoming hard to find in high grades like this example. This coin weighs 29.05 grams and has a diameter of 39.5 millimetres. Grade: GF - A light and even grey tone with good general eye appeal and the usual wear for approaching Good Fine. S 3358.
