£1,100.00
Charles I cast silver Royalist badge by Thomas Rawlins. This attractive piece features a high-relief portrait of the King, draped and armoured, with a falling lace collar to one side, and a crowned shield of royal arms, surrounded by a garter to the other. Struck in sterling silver, this medal features a small suspension loop through the lugs to the side, and the bottom appears to have been tidily removed. The level of detail here is excellent, with fine crosshatching to the reverse still preserved. These badges are often dated to the Interregnum period, following the execution of Charles I, although the design may date back to the mid-1640s.

Royalist Memorial Badges

More than forty Royalist badges were produced after the execution of King Charles I. These were designed to be worn by loyalists and generally feature a portrait of Charles, sometimes alongside his Queen, Henrietta Maria.

Thomas Rawlings (c1620-1670)

Thomas Rawlins was an English medallist and playwright who worked at the Royal Mint. He produced medals and coins at the Oxford mint during the First English Civil War, and was later made chief engraver by Charles II.

Portrait Bust Of Charles I

This badge features a high-relief portrait of King Charles I, draped and armoured, with a detailed falling lace collar, attributed to Thomas Rawlins. The surrounding inscription reads 'CAROLVS · D · G · MAG BRI FR · ET · HIB · RX'.

Shield Of Royal Arms

The reverse displays a crowned shield of royal arms against a finely textured background with a surrounding garter bearing the words 'HONI SOIT QVI MAL Y PENSE'.

Cast And Chased Badge?

This badge retains a small hanging loop to the top and shows evidence of having had lugs to the sides and bottom neatly removed. This example, however, displays a greater degree of detail than many later cast pieces.
