The Great Seal of the realm represents the signature of the monarch and is impressed into sealing wax to signify approval of important documents. King Henry VIII used several Great Seals during his reign, including this one, used to seal the 1527 Treaty of Amiens, which allied Henry with King Francis I of France against the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V. The impression, made in gold-coloured wax can be seen on the surviving treaty document in the National Archives in Paris.
