Buy a 1897 HMS Foudroyant Copper Medal

Fascinating commemorative medal, made from copper salvaged from Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson's flagship, the HMS Foudroyant. This 80-gun Royal Navy third rate was launched in 1798 and was in service through the Napoleonic Wars, including after Nelson's death in 1805, following his victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. In 1897, Foudroyant went ashore on Blackpool Sands. Many items from the wreck were salvaged, including a good quantity of copper which was later used to make medals which were sold to the public. These souvenirs feature an image of the ship on one side and a bust of Nelson on the other. As they were often retailed by sailor's benevolent funds they are sometimes found in cases stamped with the names of these charities.
