Graded undated USSR gold proof medal, celebrating Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova's solo flight aboard Vostok 6. Between 16 and 19 June 1963, Tereshkova orbited Earth 48 times, becoming the first woman in space. The obverse displays a profile portrait of Tereshkova, paired with a stylised reverse showing a man and a rocket in flight, together with the dates of her mission. This medal is struck in 17 grams of solid .900 fine gold (as noted on the reverse) and measures 29 millimetres in diameter. It was issued as part of a series celebrating famous Russians. Sources suggest that just 1,122 of these large gold Tereshkova medals were issued in 1964. This example is supplied sealed in its NGC holder.

Portrait Of Valentina Tereshkova

The obverse of this gold medal features a right-facing portrait bust of Valentina Tereshkova. This is attributed to the Soviet sculptor Grigory Nikolaevich Postnikov (1914-1978), whose name appears on the truncation, along with the year (1964).

16-19 June 1963 Flight Reverse

The reverse shows. Man holding a star and a rocket soaring into space with 'CCCP' and the date of Tereshkova's space flight aboard Vostok 6 (16-19 June 1963) below.

Struck In Solid .900 Gold

This USSR medal is struck with a proof finish in 17 grams of .900 gold as noted on the reverse. This is the larger version of a pair of gold medals issued with the same design, measuring approximately 29 millimetres in diameter.

Limited Issue Collectable

1,122 of these gold medals are recorded as having been struck in 1964 as part of a series dedicated to famous Russians and milestones in the Soviet space program. A similar piece dedicated to Yuri Gagarin is also available.
