The single finest known example. This official Royal Mint gold medal was issued for the 1937 coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and has been graded MS 65 by NGC. Just 422 of these high-shine, 22-carat commemorative medals were issued by the UK's national mint, alongside more common silver editions. This piece features a crowned and draped, left-facing portrait of King George VI to one side with the words 'GEORGE VI CROWNED 12 MAY 1937'. This is paired with a profile portrait of the Queen consort, Queen Elizabeth, later known as the Queen Mother. The legend reads: 'QVEEN ELIZABETH 12 MAY 1937'. The artist behind these two effigies is Percy Metcalfe whose initials - 'PM' - appear on both the obverse and reverse, to the figures' shoulders. Metcalfe is better known for 1935 'Rocking Horse' Crown as well as his designs for the coinage of the Irish Free State. This commemorative medal has been graded MS 65 placing it at the top of the graded population. This stunning piece comes with the original red leather box of issue with embossed gold detailing to the lid. An old Royal Mint logo is printed on the silk interior. Composition: 24-carat gold. Diameter: 31.7 millimetres. Weight: 22.5 grams. References: Eimer 2046b, BHM-4314. Certification number: 6674054-004. A stand out piece.
