Large bronze medal commemorating Prince Albert Victor being awarded the freedom of the City of London in 1885. Obverse: Right facing, bare headed portrait of the prince within a border of national flowers: roses, shamrocks and thistles. Around above: H.R.H. PRINCE ALBERT VICTOR EDWARD OF WALES’ and below: ‘BORN JANUARY 8TH 1864’. Reverse: Albert moves to shake hands with a robed figure, the Lord Mayor - then Sir Robert Fowler, a spectacle maker - in attendance along with the Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandra. Above: ‘RECIEVING THE FREEDOM OF THE CITY OF LONDON JUNE 29TH 1885’. Below: the arms of the City of London. ‘G. G. ADAMS . D.F.’ to floor for George Gammon Adams, a student of Benedetto Pistrucci, whose name also appears on the truncation of the portrait’s neck to the obverse. Prince Albert Victor was the eldest child of the Prince of Wales, later king Edward VII and was, therefore, in 1885, second in line to the throne. He predeceased his father and grandmother, Queen Victoria in 1892, dying of influenza at the age of 28 and leaving his younger brother - later George V - as the new heir. This sizeable medal measures 77.00 millimetres in diameter. Grade: GEF - Dark chocolate brown with the faintest hint of rubbing to the high points and very minor scratches, mainly on obverse: no issues for a grade of good Extremely Fine. BHM 3182, Eimer 1717.
