Belgian bronze medal marking a visit of Queen Victoria to Ghent in 1843. Obverse: shows a high relief robed bust of Victoria wearing crown with hair pulled back in squared off knot. Design enclosed within decorative border. Legend: ‘VICTORIA REINE D’ANGLETERRE’. Below truncation: ‘VERACHTER DIR. HART FECIT’ identifying the medallist as Joseph Laurent Hart. Reverse: crowned arms of the city of Ghent featuring a crowned lion rampant, enclosed within a decorative circle. Above: ‘LA REINE A GAND’, below ’16 SEPTEMBRE 1843’. Victoria made a state visit to Belgium in September 1843, visiting her uncle, Leopold I, the first King of the Belgians. She landed at Ostend on 15 September and proceeding towards Brussels and sailing back from Antwerp on the 20th. Each step of this journey, including a visit to Ghent - French: Gand - is documented with medals bearing the relevant arms. Hart produced all the medals in this series. This Ghent medal has a diameter of 55.00 millimetres and weighs 77.4 grams. Grade: A UNC - Rich deep chocolate brown with even patination and good eye appeal - About Uncirculated.
