Very rare. Accession of Queen Victoria 1837 medal in copper gilt by Griffin & Hyams. Obverse: left-facing youthful portrait of Queen Victoria wearing earring and diadem, signed ‘J. BARBER’ (British medallist) on truncation. Legend around ‘VICTORIA DEI GRATIA REGINA.’ with small lettering below reading ‘PUBLISHED . BY . GRIFFIN . & . HYAMS .’. The reverse features seven lines of text within a wreath of laurel and oak leaves, secured at the bottom with a ribbon from which sprouts national flowers: a shamrock, rose and thistle. Above: the Imperial State Crown on a cushion, rays emanating. Legend reads: BORN / 24 . MAY . 1819 / ASCENDED / THE / THRONE / JUNE . 20 . 1837.’. Victoria ascended the throne on the death of her uncle, William IV, and was crowned the following year in 1838.
