Scottish bronze medal commemorating George IV’s visit to Scotland in the summer of 1822. Obverse: left facing laureate bust of the king by William Bain, signed on the truncation of George’s neck as ‘BAIN. F. EDINR’. Bain worked in Edinburgh before coming to London in 1825. Obverse legend reads: ‘GEORGIUS IIII D: G: BRITANNIARUM REX F: D:’. The reverse features a long inscription surrounded by a wreath of thistles. It reads: ‘HIS MOST GRACIOUS MAJESTY MADE HIS PUBLIC ENTRY INTO THE CAPITAL OF SCOTLAND AUGUST 15TH AND LEFT IT ON THE 29TH 1822’. George’s visit was the first from a reigning British monarch in nearly 200 years. The trip was organised by Sir Walter Scott and his romanic view of the Scottish Highlands dominated the attendant pageantry despite the royal party hardly leaving Edinburgh. George appeared at an event at Holyrood wearing a kilt, his get up - much caricatured at the time - did much to popularise tartan in the Lowlands. This attractive medal has a diameter of 45.00 millimetres and weighs 36.8 grams. Grade: A UNC - Rich deep chocolate brown tone with even patination and much reflection for about Uncirculated. BHM 1179, Eimer 1162.
