1821 bronze medal celebrating the coronation of George IV and his subsequent visit to Hanover. Obverse: right-facing laureate and draped bust of the king, inscribed below ‘G. LOOS DIR. C. VOIGHT FEC.’. This identifies the engraver as the Berlin-born Karl Freiderich Voight, working for G Loos in this period and later in London under Benedetto Pistrucci. Legend reads: ‘GEORGIVS IV D. G. BRITAN. ET HANNOV. REX FID. DEF.’. Reverse: Fortune, with cornucopia and caduceus leading George, mounted on a horse, riding right. The king wears a crown of laurels and ermine lined coronation robes. Above: ‘FELICEM AVGVSTI ADVENTVM’. In exergue: ‘REGNVM HANNOVERAN. / CELEBRAT / MDCCCXXI’. The edge, inscribed with raised lettering reads: ‘* BEROLINI EX OFFICINA MONETARIA D. LOOS FIL.’ George visited Hanover soon after his coronation in July 1821 when he was crowned King of Hanover, as well as King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. He also visited Ireland in the same year and a Scottish visit followed in 1822. This medal measures 40.00 millimetres in diameter and weighs 34.0 grams.
