AE medal commemorating the accession and coronation of George IV. Obverse: left facing high relief laureate bust of George. ‘GEORGE IV’ at top with ‘ASCENDED THE BRITISH THRONE JAN 29 1820 IN THE 58 YEAR OF HIS AGE’ around in smaller lettering. Unsigned but perhaps John Gregory Hancock. Reverse: wreath of national flowers - rose, thistle and clover - with crown above and ‘GR / IV’ in centre. ‘CORONATION’ above and ‘AT WESTMINSTER JULY 19 1821’ below. Various medals were struck to mark George IV’s coronation in 1820. He acceded to the throne the previous year following the death of his father, George III. He had been acting as Prince Regent since 1811 due to his father’s mental illness. He would reign in his own right for ten years. This bronze medal measures 46.00 millimetres in diameter and weighs 38.6 grams. Grade: UNC - Deep, rich chocolate brown colour with even patination and much reflection: Uncirculated.
