Bronze medal commemorating the passing of Princess Charlotte of Wales in 1817. Obverse: three quarters profile bust of Charlotte wearing a crown of flowers, draped. Legend around: ‘H · R · H · PRINCESS CHARLOTTE AUGUSTA.’. In exergue: BORN JAN · 17 1796. / MARRIED MAY 2. / 1816 ·’. Engraver identified in lettering to left of portrait as ‘WEBB · F ·’ - the British medallist Thomas Webb. The reverse features a seated, weeping female figure, identified as Britannia. She rests her spear on her shoulder, her helmet at her feat. A lion sits at her side, behind them a crowned urn and in the background a broken pillar. Above: ‘DIED NOV. VI MDCCCXVII.’. Below: WEEP BRITAIN THOU HAST LOST / THE EXPECTANCY AND ROSE / OF THE FAIR STATE’. Below this ‘MUDIE D MILLS F’ identifying the medallist as George Mills, working for James Mudie. Princess Charlotte Augusta was the only child of George VI though she died in childbirth before he came to the throne. Had she lived she would have become Queen of the United Kingdom. Though only 21 at her death, Charlotte was very popular and was the subject of intense mourning in Britain. This bronze death medal measures 51.00 millimetres in diameter and weighs 62 grams.
