Bronze medal commemorating the capture of the town of Bouchain in 1711. Obverse: high relief laureate and draped portrait of the queen, facing left. Hair tied at hack of head with curls over shoulders. Legend around: ‘ANNA AVGVSTA’. Engraver: John Croker, his initials - ‘IC’ to the edge of her mantle. Reverse: French soldier, kneeling, offering sword and musket to female figure, seated on cannon and other weaponry, her oval-shaped shield reading ‘FOR- / TVNA / MA- / NENS’ (‘abiding fortune’). Above: ‘HOSTES · AD · DEDITIONEM · COACTI.’ (‘The enemy is compelled to surrender’). Below: ‘VALLO · GALLORVM · SVPERATO · / ET · BVCHEMIO · CAPTO . / MDCCXI.’ (The French lines passed and Bouchain taken). A crown sits on the ground between the two figures and in the background the fortified town of Bouchain. The town was besieged for 34 days through the August and into the September of 1711 by forces led by John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Though successful, the siege - conducted as part of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1715) - would be Marlborough’s last major victory. The town was recaptured the following year but not before this celebratory medal was issued. This example weighs 36.16 grams and has a diameter of 45.00 millimetres. Grade: AEF - Dark chocolate brown colour with the very faintest hint of rubbing to high points but no issues for about Extremely Fine. Eimer 450.
