John Croker medal of Queen Anne celebrating the capture of Douai in 1710. Obverse: left-facing laureate bust of the queen, hair secured with pearls and ruffled neckline. Legend around ‘ANNA · AVGVSTA ·’. The initials ‘I C’ below the truncation of the effigy identify the artist. Born in Saxony, Croker would become chief engraver to the Royal Mint in 1705. He was responsible for almost all of the coinage dies for Anne and George I as well as many for George II. Obverse: figure of Victory - winged - attaching a shield inscribed ‘SALVS / PROVIN’ to a column with captured trophies including flags and cannonballs at its base. In the background, a French soldier flees from an armoured female figure, carrying a spear: perhaps Britannia. Above: VALLO · GALLORVM · DIRVTO.’. In exergue: ‘ET · DVACO · CAPTO · / MDCCX ·’. The city of Douai was subject to successive sieges from 1710 through 1712 as part of the War of the Spanish Succession. These sieges almost completely destroyed the town. The 1710 siege which lasted from late April to late June was commanded by John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, at the head of an Allied army. He would be dismissed as commander in 1712. This bronze medal measures 50.00 millimetres in diameter and weighs 41.3 grams.
