Queen Anne bronze medal celebrating the successful siege of the town of Mons, during the War of the Spanish Succession. Obverse: draped, left-facing bust of Queen Anne, her hair held back by two rows of pearls. This is the work of John Croker whose initials - I C - appear below the effigy. Legend: ‘ANNA · D: G: MAG: BRI: FRA: ET · HIB: REG:’. Reverse, figure of Victory or Pheme, flying left with palm frond and laurel wreath. City below. ‘MDCCIX’ in exergue and around ‘MONTIBVS IN · HANNONIA CAPTIS’ (‘Mons in Hainault captured’). The siege of Mons - today in Belgium, then under French control followed the battle of Malplaquet on 11 September and lasted from 20 September to 20 October 1709. The battle was particularly bloody on both sides but considered an Allied victory, particularly after Mons surrendered on 21 October. This commemorative medal measures 40.00 millimetres in diameter and weighs 20.3 grams. Grade: A UNC - Rich deep chocolate brown with even patination: about Uncirculated. Eimer 440.
