Bronze Queen Anne battle of Malplaquet medal dated 1709. Obverse: crowned, left-facing portrait with pearls in hair and on shoulder wearing decorative lace collar and garter star on breast. Legend around: ‘ANNA · D: G · MAG: BRI: FR : ET · HIB: REG:’. Faint initials - ‘I C’ - at shoulder for the engraver John Croker. Born in Saxony, Croker migrated to London and worked as a medallist, appointed chief engraver to the Royal Mint in 1705. He produced almost all coinage dies for the next three decades and engraved a series of medals celebrating important royal and military events. Reverse: winged figure of Victory flying above a battlefield and holding two laurel wreaths. Cannon smoke engulfs the armies in the forest of Taisnieres, near the village of Malplaquet: the scene of a bloody episode in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). Above Victory: ‘CONCORDIA · ET · VIRTUE’ (‘unity and valor’). Below: ‘GALLIS · AD · TAISNIERE · / DE VICTIS · / AVG : XXXI. / MDCCIX ·’ (the French defeated at Taisniere, 31 August 1709’). This bronze commemorative medal measures 48.00 millimetres in diameter and weighs 57.4 grams.
