Queen Anne’s Bounty medal in bronze, dated 1704. Obverse: draped, laureate-wearing bust of the queen, facing left. Legend around: ‘ANNA · D: G: MAG: BRI FR: ET · HIB: REG:’. Initials ‘I C’ appear in a folder of her fringed mantle identifying the artist as John Croker. Born in Saxony, Croker would become chief engraver to the Royal Mint in 1705. He was responsible for almost all of the coinage dies for Anne and George I as well as many for George II. Reverse: group of clerics, led by a kneeling bishop, offered charter by the enthroned figure of Queen Anne who holds a sceptre in her other hand. Above: ‘PIETAS AVGVSTE ·’. Below: ‘PRIMITIIS · ET · DECIMIS · / ECCLESIAE · CONCESSIS · / MDCCIV’. The medal commemorates a scheme established to augment the income of poor Church of England clergymen by funding the purchase of land in low income parishes. The grant was advocated for by Gilbert Burnet, Bishop of Salisbury, who can probably be identified with the central figure. This bronze medal has a diameter of 45.00 millimetres and weighs 44.3 grams. Grade: UNC - Light rich brown tone with some mint lustre. Eimer 404.
