Stunning NGC graded 1702 Queen Anne gold coronation medal designed by Sir Isaac Newton and engraved by John Croker. Just 858 of these medals were struck in gold and this example represents a rare survival. The obverse features a left-facing bust of Anne, her hair pulled back with a ribbon, a single lock of hair falling over her shoulder. It’s one of several effigies of Anne, produced by Croker for medals issued during her reign, celebrating military and political victories, including the Act of Union. The reverse depicts Anne in the guise of Pallas Athena, lightning bolts in hand, ready to hurl them at a two-headed serpentine monster to the right. This creature represents the twin Catholic threats of James III ‘the Old Pretender’ and King Louis XIV of France. This motif originated with Sir Isaac Newton who - at the time of Queen Anne’s coronation - was serving as Master of the Royal Mint. This 27.63 gram, 25 millimetre gold medal has been graded MS 62 by the Numismatic Guaranty Company and is offered sealed in its NGC holder (certification number: 6674054-001). A contemporary round leather case is also included. References: Eimer 390, BHM 228.4. A very attractive example of a sought-after piece.
