Silver hammered Shilling of Charles I, struck at the Tower mint under Parliamentary control between 1641 and 1643. Obverse: sixth large ‘Briot’s’ bust, type 4.4. Portrait of the king facing left with stellate lace collar and double arched crown. ‘XII’ behind for value: 12 Pence. Beaded border separating portrait from legend which (though hard to read here) runs: ‘CAROLVS · D .' G .' MAG .' BRI .' FRA .' ET HI .' REX’. Mint mark: triangle in circle. Reverse: square-topped shield of royal arms, quartered by cross moline within beaded circle. Triangle within circle mint mark and legend reading: ‘· CHRISTO · AVSPICE · REGNO ·’. Parliament seized control of the Tower mint in 1642 and retained control of London through the rest of the civil conflict while continuing to mint coinage in the kings name until 1649.
