£225.00
Hammered silver Groat of Charles I with an open book mint mark indicating that this coin was struck at the Aberystwyth Mint. The obverse shows a left facing large portrait of the king, crowned and wearing a lace collar, within a beaded circle. His headgear barely breaks the circle. In front, plumes, behind, ‘IIII’ - the numerals identifying the denomination. The reverse shows a garnished shield of royal arms, quartered with plumes above, the book mint mark to the left. The mint at Aberystwyth was founded to mint coinage closer to the Welsh mines with the intention of simulating local industry. Charles personally approved the scheme, put forward by a Thomas Bushell, with the crown taking a 10% share. The coins minted at Aberystwyth between 1638 or 1639 and 1642 are distinguished by a Welsh plumes motif and/or an open book mint mark. In September 1642 the king issued a declaration near the market town of Wellington in Shropshire, an action that proceeded the first pitched battles of the English Civil War. Production of coinage at Aberystwyth presumably ceased as Bushell moved to Shrewsbury - an early royalist stronghold. This coin weighs 1.75 grams and has a diameter of 23.4 millimetres. Grade: F - Full flan with light even tone and good clear details - high points work but still Fine. Spink 2891.
