Hammered silver Groat with portrait of Henry VIII, struck at Canterbury, early in the reign of Edward VI. Obverse: bust 5 - three quarters facing bust of Henry VIII with crown and beard within beaded circle. Legend around reads ‘HENRIC 8 D G AGL FRA Z HIB REX’. No visible mint mark. Reverse: long cross fourchée quartering shield of royal arms within beaded circle. Legend reads: ‘CIVI | TAS | CAN | TOR’. No mint mark legible. These debased, posthumous silver coins were struck in London and at a range of regional mints between 1547 and 1551 when they were replaced with a coinage showing the face of the new king. This coin weighs 2.56 grams and has a diameter of 25.9 millimetres. Grade: GF - Even tone with good metal and clear details, Fine or better for this issue. S 2408, North 1875.
