The artist's initials are below the truncation, together with an inscription that reads 'ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA · REGINA · FID · DEF'. This design is unmistakably the bullion version of the effigy, lacking the detail and high-contrast appearance of proof coins.
The reverse of this coin features Benedetto Pistrucci's classic Saint George and the dragon design; the devices are frosted while the surfaces display a mirror finish, typical of UK proof coins.
The Royal Mint released 3,263 proof Sovereigns in 2014, with this error impacting a small number of coins from this issue displaying this unusual error. Numismatists refer to errors of this kind as 'mules' because they are produced when a non-matching set of dies and paired up. The name comes from the offspring of a horse and a donkey.
