Unique Gibraltar mule 1989/1990 50p, certified as a mint error by NGC. The obverse of this coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, dated 1990. This is paired with the incorrect 1989 Gibraltar Christmas design featuring a singing choir boy and a puppy wearing a Santa hat and a bow. Errors like this, where a mismatched obverse and reverse die are used, are extremely uncommon today due to advancements in modern minting technology. Our enquiries suggest this is the only known example and certainly the only 1989/1990 Gibraltar mule coin authenticated by the Numismatic Guaranty Company. We are offering this singular mint error coin sealed in its NGC holder to serious collectors of modern mules or rare 50ps.

What Are Mule Error Coins?

Mules are coins that show mismatched designs on the obverse and reverse. For instance, a tails design from one year and a reverse design from another. Mule coins were fairly common when coins were made by hand but are very rare among modern issues thanks to improvements in minting technology. The name comes from the offspring of a horse and a donkey, which is known as a mule.
