A very large issue of currency Halfcrowns were struck by the Royal Mint in 1958, coupled with a tiny mintage of proof coins (perhaps 10-20), bearing the same design but with a distinct, high-contrast, detail-rich finish.
The obverse of this proof coin features the classic first coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by sculptor Mary Gillick, along with the inscription '+ ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRATIA · REGINA'.
Edgar Fuller and Cecil Thomas designed the reverse of this Halfcrown, which shows a crowned royal shield of arms, flanked by the letters 'E' and 'R' with 'HALF CROWN 1958' below and '+ FID· ·DEF +' above.
This is a cupronickel coin, struck in the same metal as its circulating counterpart but with the distinction of a premium proof finish. Probably struck with VIPs in mind, this issue has mirrored surfaces and frosted devices.
PCGS only has one of these 1958 proof Halfcrowns in their registry, and they have appeared seldom at auction over the last two decades. This example is supplied sealed in its PCGS Gold Shield holder, graded PR66CAM.
