A silver Halfcrown of Queen Victoria, dated 1844. The obverse features the ‘Young Head’ portrait of the Queen, her hair drawn back and bound with double plain fillets. The engraver of this portrait was William Wyon though his initials do not appear on the truncation of Victoria’s neck. The reverse shows a crowned, quartered shield of royal arms within two laurel branches, tied at the base of the shield with a ribbon. Tiny national flowers are arranged below. Engraver: Jean Baptiste Merlen. In this year Queen Victoria gave birth to her fourth children and second son, Alfred, later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and welcomed king Louis Philippe I, first French king to visit a British sovereign.
