Second Bust Of King William IV
The obverse of this 1831 Sovereign features the second bust of King William IV, facing right, accompanied by a legend which reads 'GULIELMUS IIII D: G: BRITANNIAR: REX F: D:'. Incuse 'W.W.' initials to the truncation identify the engraver as William Wyon. This distinct bust type was identified in the 1980s and can be seen on some 1831 and 1832 Sovereigns before coming into sole use from 1833 through to the end of this monarch's reign.
Crowned And Quartered Shield
A crowned, garnished and quartered shield of royal arms by Jean Baptiste Merlen appears on the reverse with the crowned arms of the House of Hanover in escutcheon and the words 'ANNO 1831' below.
Plain Edge Proof 1831 Sovereign
This 1831 coin features a plain edge and a specimen finish. The mintage for this issue is assumed to be around 225, with recent editions of The Standard Catalogue To The Gold Sovereign Series rating this coin 'S' for 'Scarce'.
