Gold Two Guinea of King George II, struck in 1738 and graded XF 45 by NGC. Obverse: Left-facing laureate portrait of King George II. Young head. Legend reads: ‘GEORIVS · II · DEI · GRATIA ·’. Reverse: ornate shield of royal arms with eight stringed Irish harp to bottom left quarter. Legend around reads: ‘M · B · F · ET · H · REX · F · D · B · ET · L · D · S · R · I · A · T · ET · E ·’. Translation: ‘King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Duke of Brunswick and Luneburg, Arch-Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire’. The date appears with two numerals each side of the crown. Toothed edge. The future George II was brought up in Germany. His father, King George I, the Elector of Hanover, succeeded Queen Anne under the terms of the Act of Settlement and the Acts of Union. After his succession to the throne the younger George continued to spend much time on the continent. He was the last British monarch to lead an army in battle, participating in the 1743 Battle of Dettingen, part of the War of the Austrian Succession. George’s reign was the last to see Two Guinea coins struck for circulation with the last currency pieces issued in 1753. This 1738 example has been graded XF 45 by the Numismatic Guaranty Company.
